How does DyKnow Monitor block apps on Windows 8 or 8.1?

Follow

Question

Microsoft introduced a new desktop experience with live tiles in Windows 8 and continued the trend in Windows 8.1. Students may download apps for use in the Modern environment from the Windows App Store. Is it possible to block those applications?

Answer

Yes. When using DyKnow Monitor 5.8 or 5.7 a teacher can block all modern apps. There isn't a way to block individual modern apps. When you go to set up an application blocking plan, you'll see a checkbox that allows you to block Modern apps. Selecting that will limit the students to using programs in the traditional desktop area. Within the desktop area, you can block selected apps while allowing others.
